Supported Housing for Homelessness

Independent Living Services (ILS) provides medium- to long-term supported housing to individuals facing imminent homelessness and those who are currently homeless. We’re based in Weston-super-Mare and make safe, clean, and affordable housing in a private bedroom accessible to those who need it most.

ILS is a private organisation that helps people facing a wide range of personal challenges, including homelessness, find safe and comfortable housing within a caring and compassionate community and a structured environment. Our goal is to help our residents find stability and consciously work towards betterment and progress. We provide an extensive range of support programmes that help our residents build skills, find and maintain gainful employment, and ultimately return to fully independent living.

If you have immediate concerns about how to meet your accommodation needs or wish to move out of short-term housing, get in contact with ILS. We provide:

  • A private bedroom for each resident.
  • Safe, clean, and comfortable shared spaces.
  • A structured drug- and alcohol-free environment.
  • Access to secondary treatment for substance abuse.
  • Skills and career development opportunities.
  • Debt counselling, legal advocacy, and assistance in applying for benefits.
  • Access to a close-knit community of individuals striving to improve their quality of life.
  • The chance to transition back to fully independent living.

The stress of facing homelessness, especially for the first time, as well as that of enduring homelessness and housing insecurity, can leave lasting physical and emotional scars. ILS strives to help people by making security, support, and opportunity affordable and accessible to all. We support both privately paying residents and those receiving government benefits.

Accessible and Affordable Community-Based Supported Housing for All

We believe in everyone’s right to safe and accessible housing. Whether you are paying privately or through government-assisted benefits, ILS can provide you with secure and comfortable housing within a supportive community.

Our facilities

ILS manages eight supported houses in Weston. We are within an hour’s drive from Bristol, Cardiff, Bath, and Newport, and easily accessible from London, Birmingham, and other major cities. Our clean and comfortable houses can each accommodate up to five residents in private bedrooms, some with private en-suite bathrooms, and feature well-equipped shared spaces, kitchens, and gardens.

Our houses are close to major public transport hubs, making daily commutes to and from work, educational centres, shopping hotspots, and medical service providers easy and convenient. We’re also close to the beach, various public parks, and green spaces.

How does ILS help residents facing homelessness?

Unlike shelters that often aim to provide shorter-term solutions to homelessness, ILS thinks in the longer term. Our systems take the challenges and difficulties of homelessness into consideration and make provisions for personalised care and consideration.

Upon admission, we first provide stability and security. We give our residents some time and space to unpack and adjust to their new private room, surroundings, and housemates, after which we transition to a structured programme that includes debt counselling, legal aid and advocacy, skills development, and regular work.

ILS understands that innumerable circumstances could lead to homelessness or prevent one from finding stable housing. Our programmes of support are uniquely tailored to each resident’s specific needs, ensuring that their time is spent making progress towards long-term, fully independent living. Potential residents may be randomly drug tested to ensure that they are no longer actively abusing drugs or alcohol. We are a substance-free environment and this ensures the safety and congruity of all our residents.

Our residents come from a wide range of backgrounds and each has their own unique story to tell. What everyone shares is the belief that a better future is possible and that with the right support and incremental steps towards independence, anyone can live a rich and meaningful life in a place of their own. We cannot overstate the importance and role of community support, and we have seen firsthand how our community helps guide even the most hopeless towards a life in control and with meaning.

How much does ILS cost?

We have committed ourselves to keeping our costs as affordable as possible and work with local and national organisations to achieve this. We accommodate privately paying residents as well as residents who receive government benefits or other forms of financial assistance. We take pride in providing a helping hand to anyone who is serious about working towards a better future, and we go out of our way to help accommodate residents from all financial backgrounds.
